This visit to Ecuador took place during August to September 2010. The local guide was Juan Carlos Calvachi. The trip was in two parts an initial recce trip to the Amazonia region of Ecuador and a second part which was centred around locations close to Quito. One day was spent in the Pasochoa Reserve close to Quito before we left to fly to Coca for the visit to Amazonia. The transfer to Sacha Lodge involved an 80km journey down the Rio Napo in motorised canoe followed by a 20 minute walk before a final paddle canoe transfer across the blackwater Pilchacocha Lake. Three nights at Sacha Lodge with a local guide, Pablo, was followed by a transfer 20 minutes further down the Rio Napo to Napo Wildlife Centre (NWC) on the blackwater Laguna Anangucocha. Four nights were spent here with local guide Marcello. Highlights of these two lodges were the 300 m long forest canopy walkway and Kapok tree platform at Sacha and the Kapok tree platform at NWC. Return to Quito for one night was followed by transfer to Septimo Paraiso Lodge, near Mindo,in the western subtropical zone for three nights. The highlight of this section of the trip was the visit to Angel Paz Reserve to view the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock Lek together with the Antpittas. Three nights were then spent in Quito at El Jardin which allowed visits to the Yanacocha Reserve and Antisana Reserve to view the Andean Condor. The final two lodges on the itinerary were Termas de Papallacta, a spa built around volcanic hot springs and San Isidro near the village of Cosanga in the eastern subtropical cloud forest area before our return to Quito for one night and return home.
