INTRODUCTION
This visit to Peru took place over a three week period during October-November 2018. The trip started with an overnight in Lima before a flight to Tarapoto in northern Peru and a visit to Aconabikh Private Reserve. The following day involved a drive to the town of Moyobamba, with a stay in Waqanki Lodge which allowed a visit to the Arena Blanca Private Reserve to see the Tinamous before transferring to Abra Patricia lodge. A short distance from Abra Patricia was the Fundo Alto Nieva reserve with hummingbird and Tanager feeders and La Llanteria with feeders for Sicklebill hummingbirds, although the sicklebills did not make an appearance. From Abra Patricia the next location was Huembo Lodge the prime site for viewing the Marvellous Spatuletail Hummingbird. Surprisingly this unusual hummingbird was a regular visitor to the feeders and photographic opportunities were frequent. From Huembo Lodge we drove to the town of JaƩn for a return flight to Lima with an overnight in the capital before an early flight the next morning to the city of Puerto Maldonado in the southern Amazonian region of Peru. A one hour bus ride in heavy rain took us from the airport to the river port for a two hour boat ride up the Tambopata River to Posada Amazonas Lodge. Two nights in this lodge was then followed by a transfer a further three hours up river to Tambopata Research Centre Lodge where we stayed for four nights and finally a one night stop in Refugio Amazonas Lodge on the way back to Puerto Maldonado. During our stay in the Amazonian region we were fortunate to see two jaguars at very close range in the open and large numbers of macaws at the clay licks. From Puerto Maldonado we flew back to Lima and stayed one night in the Miraflores area of Lima, using our final day to explore sea birds at the small fishing village of Pucusana south of Lima, together with the private reserve of Lomas de Asia with an unusual seasonal vegetation and finally the marsh area of Pantanos de Villa.
